Description 

Oak whisky barrels cut in half make excellent planters and are available in a variety of sizes from 63cm diameter up to 90cm diameter. Fresh from the Scottish distilleries the oak barrels are high quality and cut in half to order with all metal bands tacked so they will never drop this helps preserve the life of the barrel for many years to come. 

The barrels are made of oak each barrel stave being about 15-20mm thick. Having been in the whisky trade for many years they are weathered and may also have markings on from the distillery which adds to the character. As the barrels are stored inside whilst used in the whiskey industry they have many years left in them and you can expect a barrel to last 10 – 15 years on average and another great advantage is that they are frost proof. 

Using oak barrel planters is an eco-friendly way of planting and also adds rustic charm to your garden. The planters are burnt inside which is part of the whisky industry (burning the inside helps with the flavour of the whisky and also helps colour it), all you need to do is add drainage holes in the planter (we can do this for you if you add a note to your order), put some stones/gravel in the base and then fill with soil before putting your plants in. 

Please note we sell these as planters, you can request one with a solid base so it will hold water but we have had issues in the past with the whisky coming out of the wood and causing an oily film in the water, hence the reason we only sell them as planters.  If you want to use a barrel for a pond we recommend our lined barrel as this eliminates the problems with the whisky in the wood.
