Stretton Oak Tubs was set up in 1998 when David was a driver delivering Land Rover spares around Scotland. It started by Liz wanting some oak planters for herself and when David fetched her two back, he was asked to fetch more for both his mother and some of our neighbours. One of our friends ran a local DIY shop and when David showed them to him he wanted twenty to sell in his shop.
The business steadily grew, with a trailer full of planters, David went to the garden centres around the West Midlands offering our goods. Our main supplier (Speyside Timber Products based in Dufftown) came down to the NEC in Birmingham for a week each year to do the GLEE exhibition for trade customers. We would help them set up the stand every year and also take it down at the end of the week and we would then purchase the goods from the stand and sell the water features ourselves via local garden fairs.
In 2005 following the birth of our son, Liz went on a website design course and designed our first website, it was very basic but it worked. In 2010 we got our website redesigned professionally with an online shop and the business has just steadily grown.
We are still just a husband and wife team and both work fulltime within the business. This is the way we like to keep it. We work on the basis that when we get an order it is dispatched within 48 hours and we keep the customer fully informed of the orders progress. We do everything ourselves only using third parties for delivering the items. We have tracking facilities here for all the delivery companies so we can chase if we need to.
